  • Indoor flowering time: ~70 days
  • Indoor yield: 600 g/m2

It is recommended that you grow Blue Dream indoors since when the strain is grown outside it can be overly susceptible to spider mite infestations. The strain flowers in about 70 days and can produce up to 600 grams per 1000 watts or per square meter. There have been reports of Blue Dream grown outdoors with yields up to seven pounds per plant.

Growing this strain requires some patience: it can be a slow grower in the early stages taking some time to branch out in its entirety. It requires close attention to humidity to avoid mold and mildew. It is also a favorite of mites and pests so try to avoid exposure if you can! Once the plant reaches maturity, however, it is fairly easy to maintain.

Blue Dream is not a proprietary strain, monopolized by a handful of secretive growers. As High Times cultivation expert Danny Danko noted, "she’s a clone-only strain that isn’t hoarded or claimed by one particular group. Blue Dream is considered more 'open sourced' and cuttings are easy to find." It's a highly productive strain. As High Times' Danko noted: "Growers rave about how Blue Dream is so easy to grow and also a big yielder. Two pounds per 1000-watt light is a fairly standard indoor harvest for Blue Dream and she’s notoriously resistant to powdery mildew. Clones of Blue Dream also root quickly and consistently as well, making it a cultivator's dream plant to grow." Or, as Johnny Green at the Weed Blog put it: "Blue Dream is a very hearty marijuana strain, and has very consistent yields compared to other strains. That makes it very popular with growers since they can fairly easily gauge how much, and what quality, of yield to expect from their harvests.

Leaves on the Blue-Dream strain are long and thin and seem to stretch on indefinitely. Growing Blue-Dream indoors is preferred since the plant is quite susceptible to spider mites outdoors. When properly grown outside and not affected by pests, one plant can yield up to 7 pounds of cannabis. Dense buds look almost like popcorn. Medium-green colored w/ clusters of orange pistils. When grown well, Blue-Dream cannabis will be frosted with a thick layer of sticky tri-chromes.

History

Story: Though the creator remains a mystery, this strain came out of the Santa Cruz area medical scene in Northern California and has since blown up in every medical marijuana marketplace around the country since, becoming one of the most popular strains available. The strain was recently recreated by DJ Short himself as “Azure Haze”, using a special Silver Haze mother and a Blueberry F4, one generation closer to the mother plant than the F5 used in the original cross.

A sativa-dominant cross between DJ Short’s original Blueberry and Super Silver Haze, Blue Dream is among the most popular strains found on the West Coast today. It’s almost… too popular. It is easily one of the most common strains offered at California pot dispensaries, and every commercial grower seems to be growing lots of it. Blue Dream is pervasive almost to the point of overkill. Buyers at pot shops these days roll their eyes when they see, yet again, another pound of Blue Dream on offer. It is so common, I found a prescription bottle labeled Blue Dream — that still had nugs in it — languishing in the gutter at the corner of Haight and Ashbury. Apparently, even the San Francisco street kids were over it! But there is a reason why Blue Dream has reached such excessive prevalence. Blue Dream is fast becoming a new favorite among chronnoisseurs. It completely takes over your senses. All you see, smell, taste and feel is Blue Dream. Its bluish-purple hue with frosty sparkles makes it look like it got blasted to Earth from some intergalactic candy land. Its high crystal content delights your sense of touch, teasing your fingers with its resinous stickiness. Its deep, fruity smell is the reason you were born with a nose. For the first several moments, you can focus on little more than, “Holy wha??? Whoa, what’s happening…” But once you adjust to your new altitude, you’ll find Blue Dream to be quite a functional high.

A recent article by Julia Wright at Civilized called Why 'Blue Dream' Was The #1-Seller In Both Colorado And Washington, referencing this study from BDS Analytics revealed that Blue Dream was the best selling strain in both Colorado and Washington in 2015. It’s an interesting finding that they attribute mostly to the marketing of the strain. But, perhaps there’s more to Blue Dream’s popularity than just simple branding… It comes as no surprise that Blue Dream is a top seller as the strain has been quite popular in California for many years as well. So popular that, of course, there are also many Blue Dream haters out there who won’t smoke it for various reasons. When grown properly, Blue Dream can be quite a treat. The problem is that it’s typically so mass-produced that it suffers in quality and also has the distinction of becoming so ubiquitous and familiar, that some connoisseurs dismiss it outright. It certainly doesn’t pack the punch of OG Kush or Girl Scout Cookies but there’s something about Blue Dream that people continue to love. Growers rave about how Blue Dream is so easy to grow and also a big yielder. Two pounds per 1000-watt light is a fairly standard indoor harvest for Blue Dream and she’s notoriously resistant to powdery mildew (PM). Clones of Blue Dream also root quickly and consistently as well, making it a cultivators dream plant to grow. Another reason for this variety’s popularity among growers is that she’s a clone-only strain that isn’t hoarded or claimed by one particular group. Blue Dream is considered more “open sourced” and cuttings are easy to find. Blue Dream is also a great strain to make concentrates from, with a scent and flavor of sandalwood incense and blueberries. Lab testing has found that Blue Dream is high in several interesting terpenes including myrcene, terpinolene and caryophyllene. The strain acts as a bronchodilator and works great to soothe headaches, anxiety and even depression. Women and people over 40 also love it. Anecdotal evidence reveals that it helps with cramping and other menstrual symptoms. The cerebral high, not too strong but quite uplifting, helps those of us who’ve lost a step or two motivate ourselves to be productive and artistic. In other words Blue Dream is a classic daytime strain for someone seeking inspiration. Or maybe it could be Juicy J’s “Blue Dream and Lean” that made the strain so popular? Perhaps we’ll never know…

Additional Information

You will find Blue Dream listed as a Sativa strain on most dispensary menus throughout California because of the strong, energetic head-high it is known for. However, digging deeper you will find that the actual Blue Dream genetics can be linked to Blueberry and Super Silver Haze, making it a 50/50 hybrid strain of cannabis. This explains why patients experience a nice full-body high from the Blueberry (Indica), but also a powerful cerebral experience from its Haze (Sativa) genetic counterparts. Being a 50/50 hybrid, you get the best of both worlds with this strain of cannabis. The effects are instant & plentiful, making it an instant favorite among most MMJ patients. However, as with all strains of cannabis, the specific phenotype you are medicating with is unique and has its own characteristics. For this reason, it’s important to remember that not all Blue Dream cuts will make you feel happy, energetic, with a soaring head-high. Although common, this is not always the case. Rather, depending on the Blue Dream phenotype, people may experience more of a full body melt (Indica-dominant) or uplifting head high (Sativa-dominant). It really depends on the specific phenotype you are medicating with. Like people, all strains of cannabis have their unique differences.

Blue Dream is strong (17-18% THC) and it's sativa-dominant (80%-20%), so the cerebral stoniness nicely balances the indica couchlock tendencies. Tokers end up with full-body relaxation and cerebral invigoration. And, given its Blueberry parentage, it unsurprisingly has a luscious sweet berry aroma. And it looks good, too. Blue Dream also appears to have a lot of medicinal utility. Users say it works well to soothe headaches, anxiety, and even depression, and there is evidence it helps with menstrual cramps and related maladies. The high is uplifting, but not overpowering.

The smell: Fruity blueberry aroma with a subtle hint of haze and vanilla after-scent. The dry hit: Blueberry pancake flavor with an earthy bottom end, topped with a slight floral quality. The flavor: Fruity blueberry. (Remember those blue Lucky Charms?) The blueberry flavor gives way to a tinge of menthol in the aftertaste, with strong hints of vanilla and an underlying lavender aroma adding to its complexity. There is a subtle detection of a sort of exotic wood taste that might remind you of Nag Champa or some other highly aromatic incense. The cloud: Blue Dream has a distinct smell that lingers long after the joint has been smoked and whatever you were just talking about has been completely wiped from your memory. The scent of haze is most apparent in the cloud. If you walk into a room where Blue Dream has just been smoked, you’ll likely recognize it immediately, if the grins of stoned happiness aren’t evidence enough.

Blue Dream delivers instant contentment. Many find Blue Dream to be a great daytime high, suitable for energetic activity. Blue Dream gives good head highs, great for stimulating conversation. But it is balanced with an undeniable body high, giving way to a calm, relaxing effect. Its faint indica lineage is detectable only in the aspect of its occasionally stony high. I find it optimal as an evening high, great for relaxing after a long day. It soothes your muscles and mellows your mind without knocking you out, keeping you alert and present enough to engage in conversation and other mental activity. If you’re battling restlessness, Blue Dream will have you perfectly content just being.

Sativa dominant hybrid cross of Blueberry x Super Silver Haze, tasting of bursting blueberries. Much of the beautifully clear and focused high induced by this strain is the result of the predominance of alpha-pinene, the most prevalent terpene in the plant kingdom, and known for producing (as you might have guessed) the characteristic aroma of Pine trees. Some medical studies illuminate on the link between pinene and improved memory retention as well as alertness, as it inhibits the metabolic breakdown of the neurotransmitter acetylcholinesterase, which promotes these effects.
