While its lineage is much debated, everyone can agree on the indica dominance of the wildly popular Blackberry Kush. As you would expect from its name, the scent and flavor of berries predominates while the color is a visually striking mix of dark green and purple hues. It's not the easiest strain to grow or a large producer, but the payoffs in strength, flavor, eye candy, and medicinal application keep Blackberry Kush near the top of the heap in popularity.

Blackberry Kush is difficult to grow and requires regular maintenance - especially in strenuous conditions. Growing just 2-3 feet and thriving in soilless grow mediums, Blackberry Kush is an ideal fit for indoor gardens that can be closely monitored. The strain produces small but dense buds that are caked with resin, which can become so thick it will mask the underlying colors of the flower. Blackberry Kush plant yields are moderate, but most agree the strength and exceptional flavors make up for the strain's cultivation challenges and smaller harvests. Recommended indoors. Flowering Time: 55 days.

History

Blackberry Kush was created by OrGnKiD, the living legend who was among the first to introduce Kush seeds to the scene. It is a highly-prized pairing of Blackberry x White Rhino crossed with Bubba Kush, and all three of these influences are deliciously apparent. The taste and smell of the Blackberry’s sweet fruitiness are undeniable, as is the coffee of the Bubba Kush. And it would be impossible to miss the frost inherited from White Rhino.

Blackberry Kush exact heritage is unknown though it is estimated by most dispensaries to be roughly eighty percent Indica. There are those that say it a cross between an Afghani, a pure Indica, and one of the Blackberry strains while others say the Afhgani was crossed not with a Blackberry but DJ Short Blueberry. Some believe the Afghani was part of a Blackberry strain that is the father which then crossed with a Bubba Kush. A few believe that Bubba Kush was instead crossed with a DJ Short Blueberry to produce Blackberry Kush.

When considering the genetics behind the Blackberry Kush strain, it’s easy to get lost in a circle of uncertain leads. I’ve personally come across at least four conflicting histories of the strain, and it can be difficult to determine which explanation depicts its true origins. According on to one explanation, Blackberry Kush is an Indica-dominant hybrid that stems from the mixture of DJ Short‘s Blueberry and a Highland Afghani landrace. Other rumors suggest that OG Kush, Bubba Kush, or White Rhino may have been involved. Still, I’m inclined to believe it is a Blackberry X Afghani Landrace cross.

Blackberry Kush is a highly indica-dominant hybrid strain (80% indica, 20% sativa). Once again we come across a strain with many conflicting stories about genetics, however after much research and asking around my local cannabis community, I'm inclined to go with the most widely reguarded theory: Blackberry Kush is a cross between the original Blackberry strain and the Afghani Landrace strain. Not everyone can agree on the strain's lineage, but everyone can agree on the indica dominance of the strain, both in appearance and effects.

Additional Information

Blackberry Kush is an Indica dominant hybrid of Afghani and Blackberry marijuana strains. It's known to deliver an intense and long lasting effect that is true to the strain's Indica roots. Pain relief and appetite stimulation are common when medicating with Blackberry Kush as is a sedative effect that is not recommended for high-functioning activities. That said, Blackberry Kush does feature some Sativa traits, which provide more mental clarity than many other Indica strains with comparable strengths.

Blackberry Kush is surely a gorgeous spectacle for all cannabis connoisseurs to behold; just when you think it can't get any better than this, the beauty increases on a daily basis all the way to the end. It produces gorgeous indica flowers truly worthy of the hype, rock hard smaller nugs with typical super dense indica structure. The buds themselves are a deep purple and dark green peppered with red to burnt orange hairs. The taste of Blackberry Kush is as exotic as the look, layering subtle dark berry flavors beneath kush overtones of earth, green herbs, and Himalayan spice, which can be reminiscent of the hashy flavors of the high mountain passes in Afghanistan, from which half the strain's lineage was derived.

The smell: On the living plant, Blackberry Kush smells deeply luscious. Concord grape, lavender, vanilla, and sage perfume the nose. Once the bud is dry, a gentle fluff brings up the grape, rose, and raspberry high notes, with a layering of lavender and sage. All of this is cradled by a classic Bubba-esque bottom end that gives rise to a hint of Blue Mountain Jamaican coffee in the after-scent. The dry hit: The dry hit floods the mouth with a lush bouquet of grape, sage, and raspberry, with indescribably yummy, floral undertones. The flavor: The signature Bubba Kush taste is only mildly apparent beneath the potent berry flavor. One hit creates an atmosphere of grape, lavender, sage, coffee, rose, and raspberry, with a pungent, sweet finish. The high: BBK injects every cell with peaceful tranquility, enhancing the simple pleasure of doing nothing at all. A moderate pain reliever, it also helps diffuse feelings of anxiety. It is highly introspective; more conducive to daydreaming or meditating than social settings, unless one prefers social settings wherein pretty much nobody talks. That said, even the chattiest of friends will give it a rest after a few hits of this. It’s also worth noting that BBK induces some serious munchies, making this strain a no-brainer for anyone who’s been invited to dinner by someone of questionable cooking skills.
