Skunk #1 goes back to the beginning of cannabis breeding as we know it today. This sativa-dominant hybrid originally consisted of Afghani, Mexican, and Columbian landrace strains. According to the story, it was developed by the legendary cannabis breeder Sam the Skunkman in California and then brought to Holland where it became the first strain to be bred for indoor cultivation and stabilization. Skunk #1 took the top prize at the very first Cannabis Cup in 1988 and it is the origin of all the Skunk varieties we see today. Relaxing, yet energizing and social, Skunk #1 can be either extremely sweet and fruity or musky and skunky, but either way it is a true classic.

  • Indoor flowering time: 45-55 days

From Sensi Seeds: This excellent indoor/greenhouse variety is fun and easy to grow. Characterized by large fan leaves and short internodes, Skunk #1 produces heavy, dense, uniformed buds with a high calyx-to-leaf ratio that allows for good airflow, making this variety a bit mold resistant and easy to manicure. At harvest time expect heavy yields of large buds with a sweet pungent skunky taste and smell with a strong deeply relaxing Indica stone. Flowering: 45-50 days.

From Dutch Passion: Blooms with long, thick buds, varying in colour from light green to golden. Very high flower to leaf ratio. Mold susceptible the last 6 weeks of flowering. Soft and sweet aroma and a very strong `up` high. Excellent variety for indoor growing or greenhouse with darkening system. Very high yields. Easy to manicure. This variety serves as a standard against which others can be measured.

From Flying Dutchmen: Skunk #1’s energetic performance and bountiful yields demonstrate the true meaning of hybrid vigour. Growth and flowering are mostly-Indica in appearance, though Skunk plants gain more height than pure Indicas when blooming. The extra-dark green of this strain’s foliage comes from her Afghan ancestors. Flowering is very fast and Skunk #1 produces robust stems and branches to support her superior yields. Short internode gaps explode into dense, rounded bud-clusters which merge into huge, heavy colas by harvest time. Skunk #1’s Sativa genes have a subtle effect on flower structure plus a wonderful influence on her effect - a stunningly potent combination of stone and high! Flowering: 50-55 days. Yield: 100 g. Height: 110-130 cm.

This plant is characterized by large fan leaves and short internode gaps that explode into dense, rounded-bud clusters. Flowering is very fast and an extremely high flower-to-leaf ratio makes this plant susceptible to mold in the last six weeks of flowering. Skunk plants also gain more height than pure Indicas when blooming.

History

Developed by legendary breeder Sam the Skunkman in the US and taken to Holland. First strain to be bred for indoor growing, stabilization, and true breeding. It's now used mostly as a building block for other hybrids. Still a favorite of some growers for its yield, early finish, and 15%+ thc levels. Large lime green to golden buds with a skunky smell, the name skunk became a generic term for any pungent high-grade domestically produced pot.

Skunk has come to be a generic term for any strong cannabis, when we say Skunk, we mean a plant descended from the original Skunk No. 1 bred by Sam in the 70s. Skunk No. 1 (AKA "The Pure"), is the origin of all the skunk varieties grown through the world today, this plant was created by Sam the Skunk Man, at Sacred Seeds, in the late 70s. Sam bred Afghani Indica, "Acapulco Gold", Mexican Sativa and Columbian Gold Sativa to create an exceptionally strong and flavourful cannabis plant.

Additional Information

Skunk #1 was the first true stabilized hybrid to enter the Dutch Cannabis greenhouses. Sacred Seeds created it in the late 1970s from Afghani Indica, "Acapulco Gold" Mexican Sativa and Columbian Gold Sativa. For the first time this strain provided growers with the good taste and high of a sativa coupled with the quick heavy flowering of an indica. Having been successfully stabilized, Skunk No. 1 has been widely used as a breeding parent for most of today’s leading "skunk" and many other strains. It is very easy to grow and has always been seen as a standard against which others can be measured. It produces dense buds varying in colour from light green to golden with a very high yield. It is easy to manicure due to its high bud-to-leaf ratio. It has a sweet smell and taste with a cerebral high.
