Known as “The Nighttime Strain” and bred specifically with pain relief and sleep in mind, Granddaddy Purple was introduced by Ken Estes in 2003. This nearly pure indica strain quickly took first place in cannabis competitions in 2004, 2005, and 2006 and has remained extremely popular, especially for those seeking to get a good night’s sleep. The high begins as a pleasant head buzz rapidly giving way to deep pain relief. In higher doses Granddaddy Purple can offer sedative effects but in general this is a good choice even for the novice.

  • Indoor flowering time: 56-63 days

As an indoor crop, Granddaddy Purple is equally happy in hydro or soil. With a pure indica heritage, this plant is predisposed to a short bushy stature. Granddaddy branches extensively, making her less than ideal for SOG style grows, but she can be trained to make an awesome super crop garden. When left to her natural tendencies, this strain will make a nice big shrub that reaches about 3 feet indoors or up to 8 feet outdoors. She is a hardy grower with tight internodes and dense dark green to purple leaves. Granddaddy Purple is easy to work with throughout her growth cycle. She likes a cool temperature, between 70-80 F, and can be very forgiving so long as she is adequately watered. Due to her high resin output and dense structure, this plant can be alluring to mites. Granddaddy Purple finishes her flowering cycle in 8-9 weeks. The buds are dense green nuggets that gain royal purple hues as they mature. Depending on the size she is allowed to reach, Granddaddy Purple can yield between 0.5 and 3.5 ounces apiece. Outdoor plants will really deliver, with potential yields between 8 ounces and 5 pounds.

It grows very well indoors, either in water, air or soil. It has a predisposition to be short in bushy, as Indicas will. Extensive branching makes this lady a not-so-good candidate for Sea of Green cultivation. However, she is able to produce heavy yields when left to growing the way she prefers. Indoors, this shrub-like plant will grow up to 3 feet. Outdoors, up to eight. Internodes are tight, leaves are dark green/purple, and overall, Granddaddy Purple is a hardy grower. At all points of the growth cycle, Granddaddy Purple medicinal cannabis is able to be easily worked with. She likes the temperature kept cool, right around 75° F. However, as long as you give her at-least-adequate nutrients, water and lighting, you'll find her to be a vigorous grower. Classification: pure indica. Optimal Environment: indoors. Prefers cooler temps. 8-9 weeks required for flowering. Yield between 8 oz and 5 lbs when grown outdoors. Susceptible to mites. Gardening Skills Required: moderate.

History

Granddaddy Purple (or GDP) genetics can be linked to the mix of Big Bud and Purple Urkle - each powerful Indica strains in their own right. Ken Estes brought them together in his search for a strain that was easy to grow and delivered much-needed pain relief. Sure enough, he was successful in his mission and Grand Daddy Purple has become a household name among medical marijuana patients and cannabis enthusiasts alike. According to the Grand Daddy Purp Collective (based in Richmond, CA), GDP is the most requested strain 6 to 1 in medical marijuana collectives.
