The legendary Blue Family of cannabis originated through breeder DJ Short’s painstaking efforts of carefully combining select landrace sativas and indicas during the late 70s and early 80s. Leaning strongly toward the indica side, Blueberry offers a combination of extended deep physical relaxation with a pleasant, euphoric high. While Blueberry is creative and uplifting, it may be best reserved for evening or weekend use, as sometimes the effects are enough to make one forget what they were doing or get distracted by a more pleasurable activity. From its distinctive blue/lavender appearance to the intoxicating sweet berry flavor and aroma, Blueberry even today remains one of the most prized and highly awarded strains.

DJ Short Blueberry is a mostly indica strain (approx. 80% indica/20% sativa) that dates to the late 1970's. A large producer under optimum conditions, that produces dense bud with red, purple and finally blue hues that usually cure to a lavender blue. A "stretch" indica, medium- tall, with long side branches that develop heavy, sticky trichome-laden buds sporting medium to large calyxes. The finished product has a very fruity aroma and taste of blueberries, producing a notable and pleasantly euphoric high of the highest quality that is very long-lasting and resistant to tolerance build-up–always enjoyable. Blueberry also has a long shelf-life and stores well over extended periods, a long cure enhancing the flavors and effect.

When growing Blueberry marijuana seeds, you’re going to end up with plants that are pleasing to the eye. You’ll also wind up with a smoke that is pleasing to the mind and body. The name, of course, comes from the “blueberry” flavors and aromas that the plant can produce. It also comes from the way that the plant grows, with distinct blues by the end of its life cycle. It comes from several different varieties including some Afghani and Thai ones. The indica-dominant hybrid is a favorite of many growers and users. One of the distinguishing features on the Blueberry marijuana plant is its impressive coloration. Early on, the plant will exude some characteristic red and purple colors, but, as it ages, it will start to evince some distinct (and beautiful) blues. The plant itself frequently smells of fruit and blueberry, making it somewhat of an air freshener for any growers. The plants are often sturdy, meaning that breaking them is no easy task. In terms of output, Blueberry marijuana seeds will produce plants that are between 20 to 40 inches tall with yields of around 15 ounces per 10 square feet. You can find about a 21% THC content, as well. Both autoflowering and feminized options are available with Blueberry marijuana seeds. It takes between 8 and 9 weeks for the plants to flower completely.

The Blueberry stays short and dense, so be sure to vegetate the plants out a bit before inducing flowering. Fan leaves will turn all kinds of beautiful fall colors, and the buds will be tinged with lavender to darker blue pigments. This strain is perfect for the “long cure” – tightly sealed and stored in jars for six months or more before smoking, Blueberry ripens to a very intoxicating and complicated profile over time.

History

"The Blueberry strain is without a doubt one of the most exquisite and colorful cannabis hybrids available in seed form today. The history of the strain takes us back to the West Coast of the United States sometime during the 1970’s, where a breeder named DJ Short was working on a multitude of exotic landrace sativas from places like Colombia, Panama, Mexico and Thailand. He was growing up to 100 plants at the time, both indoors and outdoors, on constant lookout for desirable traits in the individuals. Needless to say, he sampled a great number of plants until he found what he was looking for. In his own words, one plant out of one hundred grown carried the traits that he was looking for and then there was still the complicated matter of working with plants that are naturally prone to hermaphroditism, like most pure sativas are to some degree. His efforts would eventually yield fruit and give birth to some of the most highly regarded strains in the world today..."

This 80/20 Indica-Sativa strain is a hybrid of Purple Thai and Afghan. This plant performs at it’s best outdoors, if proper techniques and fertilizer is utilized. If grown correctly, this strain produces high yields. To no one’s surprise, there is a sweet blueberry taste associated with this strain. The patient experiences a long-lasting and energetic sensation. While not known to make the patient drowsy, it still may not be the optimal daytime strain, as a reliable memory may not be expected while using Blueberry.

DJ Short created the original Blueberry in an attempt to tame the wily “Juicy Fruit” Highland Thai and his own Purple Thai, while still retaining some of their legendary euphoric highs and fruity flavors. After backcrossing with an Afghani Indica male and making careful selections over time, the Blueberry (as well as a whole incredible line of relatives) emerged as a great find for connoisseurs and growers alike. The potency, odor and taste rival the world’s finest varieties.

Genetics are a wondrous and complicated thing. The Blueberry strain has undergone some of the most intensive and complex manipulations, and with multiple breeders in the mix, it’s no wonder we see a lot of variation. That said, we seem to test a lot of strains called Blueberry that look more like Blue Dream, and vice versa. Similar names, but the strains are truly distinct.
